Delegation From Tartarstan Meets Business Leaders in Boston
By Irene Porokhova, Esq., McDermott Will & Emery LLP

On August 28 McDermott Will & Emery LLP and USRCCNE, in cooperation with the Civilian Research and Development Foundation, hosted a delegation from the Investment and Venture Fund of Tatarstan Republic, represented by Mr. Roman Seminihin and Mr. Pavel Korolev. The Fund has over $250,000,000 under management and dozens of companies in its portfolio, in a variety of industries ranging from IT and high-tech to green energy and retail.  The Fund also co-invests additional funds with other prominent investors, such as Kuwait Fund and Ak Bars Bank.

Together with the CRDF, the delegation brought three of its portfolio companies on a road show to the US.  Prior to their visit to Boston they met with the potential business partners and co-investors in San Francisco, Austin and Atlanta.  The range of companies presented by the Fund demonstrates the variety of start-ups where the Fund is currently an active investor: Celoform LLC is developing a new type of medical sorbent for local action on septic wounds; Energolesprom, LLC offers a new solution for processing wood residue by turning wood biomass into liquid fuel; and LANEF provides new methods of electromagnetic probing and radiometry during geological exploration.

In Boston, the representatives of Tatarstan met with business leaders from a number of local businesses to discuss joint opportunities. The also met with experts from MIT to learn about the innovation ecosystem in and around Boston as well as with attorneys from McDermott to evaluate potential legal needs in the area of intellectual property, FDA approval process and corporate law.

Mr. Seminihin and Mr. Korolev expressed great interest in continuing cooperation between the Fund and USRCCNE members and associates and in making the fund’s US road show a regular event. In addition, the fund is looking to develop partnerships in the business, legal and academic communities in Boston.
