Saturday, October 24th 2015 7:30pm-9:00pm; Pre-concert lecture 6:30pm
The Mission Church, 1545 Tremont Street, Boston
2015 marks the 100th anniversary of Sergei Rachmaninoff's beloved choral masterpiece, the All-Night Vigil. In commemoration, the choir of Trinity Church interprets this enthralling and influential achievement of modern sacred music in a special performance presented by the Ballets Russes Arts Initiative at the stunning Mission Church. Often referred to as the Vespers, the All-Night Vigil features richly layered settings of traditional melodies, and the composer's own 'conscious counterfeits' of historic chants from the Russian Orthodox liturgy. The 90-minute performance will also include pieces by two earlier composers, Dmytro Bortnyansky and Piotr Tchaikovsky. Read more.
Prior to the performance, at 6:30 pm, BRAI Executive Director Anna Winestein will give a free talk in the Rectory of Mission Church about the Vigil, the history of secular Russian composers creating sacred music, and Rachmaninoff's legacy in the US. Click here to watch a variant of the lecture.
